Place-Based Learning

Field stations exist because of their location – they provide a base for scientists studying a particular place. This place-based orientation of field stations naturally lends itself to place-based, hands-on education whether it be formal or informal. The majority (over 90%) of outreach programs profiled by Outreach Survey respondents give participants 1) opportunities to experience a sense of place and/or 2) engage them with content specific to the location of the field station. In these ways, field stations are providing place-based learning experiences.
